With the aging of the baby boomer population, it seemed that the market for healthcare would stay strong, and nurses would continue to have jobs.

In the past year, however, this certainty has grown a bit shaky. Hospitals are reporting a downturn in elective procedures that tend to be paid for in full by the patient or his or her insurer, which means that some ORs are standing empty, waiting for the economy to rebound. This is particularly serious, as these most-profitable procedures are tailing off.

For some hospitals, however, the recession has enabled OR nurses to really gel as a team. In the past year, many have had a high level of nurse retention.

Do you have nurse retention needs at your hospital. As an expert on nurse recruitment and retention, I can help. Contact me.

One of their best nurse recruitment tools? There has been an upswing in employee referrals, with about 50 percent of applicants are referred by current employees.

My Each One Reach One Nurse initiative teaches hospitals and employees how to do that. For information, contact me .

Their entire administrative team and even the Hospital Board is committed to caring for nurses!

One of the criteria for the Pathways to Excellence designation is work/life balance. Rarely have I seen a hospital so committed to providing that for their nurses. Not only did they have me deliver my Chicken Soup for the Nurse’s Soul keynote outlining ways to care for themselves as they care for others, they bought every nurse in attendance my Balancing Life book! A great retention tool!

Each nurse then participated in a facilitated discussion, brainstorming ways to create physical, mental, and spiritual balance in their daily lives. Next we shared ideas on how to truly live our priorities. We decided to better listen to our kids and even kiss our husbands!

To have me share life balance with your staff, please call me at 877-844-3626. And learn more at www.NurseRecruitmentandRetention.com

The United States Labor Secretary, Hilda Stolis, has declared the government’s plans to release 220 million dollars of federal stimulus funds to training programs for workers in the medical profession.

The Labor Secretary revealed plans to stimulate the economy with the bill’s funds while touring the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas and the Shawnee County Community Health Care Clinic in Topeka. These Kansas clinics and medical centers are among the areas that need the most help, as recruitment and retention of nurses and other workers is most difficult in rural areas.

With baby boomers aging and needing further medical care, the need for nurses and health care workers will only increase. The Labor Department aims to take advantage of this medical necessity by providing workers with a chance to start over in a field that is both lucrative and necessary.

I’m eager to see when these funds are released and to whom. I have found no applications process for this. If you learn more, please post a comment and share.

Nurses want to be able to provide superb care to their patients.

If nurses can focus on the patient and not get caught up with issues that interfere with patient care, this will help to keep them at the bedside.

Cutbacks and working with less has led to the exiting of the experienced nurses because of unreasonable expectations. Providing care with less staff impacts the quality and time one nurse has to give to his/her patients…. and it affects patient care and satisfaction.

Isn’t it true, that when people do good works for benevolent reasons, for the sake of others, goodness comes back to them in return. Who wouldn’t want to work for a place like that. Kudos to Providence St. Vincent Medical Center.

Mindful of the worst job market in more than 25 years, many students enrolling in colleges and universities are considering majors that they believe will land them stable careers…that’s why many choose nursing.

But it takes more than an interest in a stable career to make a good nurse. It takes the heart of caring.

When we “seasoned” nurses entered the profession up-teen years ago, we did so because of the profound desire to help people. As I travel, helping hospitals to recruit and retain nurses, I hear many different reasons why the “new” nurses enter the profession. Too often “helping people” is too far down the line on their list.

We all need to encourage people to enter our service of caring, remembering just that…it is a service for caring. Make sure the “new” nurse has that heart.

Over 24 percent of CEOs said the economic downturn caused them to decrease nurse recruiting efforts over the last six months, The majority, at least 64 percent, said recruiting efforts at their hospitals over the last six months had not changed.
